This case highlights the idea that we never truly know what might be going on behind the picture of what appears to be a happy family. In the 1990s, Michelle “Shelly” Knotek seemed to have it all. She was married to a caring husband & they lived in their rural Raymond, Washington home with their three daughters.
From the outside, Shelly & David Knotek seemed like a selfless couple who invited their struggling friends & relatives into their home. Everything looked to be well until those guests began to disappear one-by-one. In the end, it had been Shelly’s own daughters who bravely spoke out about a harrowing tale they witnessed & experienced throughout their childhoods.
Michelle “Shelly” Knotek, formerly Shelly Watson, was born on April 15, 1954 in Raymond, Washington to parents Sharon & Les Watson. Raymond, Washington is 23 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean & a 2 hour drive southwest of Seattle.

When Shelly was very young, Sharon & Les divorced, leaving her & her two younger brothers under Sharon’s care in California.
In the fall of 1960 when Shelly was 6-years-old, her father re-married Lara Stallings, a woman ten years his junior. Only one day after their wedding, Sharon contacted Les to let him know she no longer wanted the responsibilities of their young children.
Lara, who was only a teenager herself, became a stepmother overnight when they agreed to take in 6-year-old Shelly & 3-year-old Chuck while Sharon kept Paul, who was only an infant.
Sharon had been struggling with her mental health, self-medicating with alcohol, which left her young children to fend for themselves. Her family suspected she had become a sex worker as she often brought strange men into their home.
Soon after the children moved back to Washington to live with Les & Lara, Lara quickly noticed that while Shelly did all the talking, Chuck didn’t speak a word. She also seemed very controlling of her little brother.
After Sharon dropped them off, she went back to California & never contacted Shelly or Chuck again. Moving forward seven years to the spring of 1967, when Shelly was 13-years-old, a homicide detective from the LAPD contacted the Watsons at their home in Battle Ground, Washington to inform them that Sharon had been murdered in a run-down motel.
They not only needed Les to identify her body, but to also pick up their son, Paul. After he begrudgingly agreed to retrieve Paul at Lara’s insistence, he learned that Sharon & her boyfriend had been living on Skid Row & he had beaten her to death.
Despite the loss the young teen must have felt inside, Shelly seemed entirely unfazed by her mother’s death, burying her feelings away, never once asking about her mom. No doubt, the first six years of her life had been so traumatic that she wouldn’t allow others to see her pain.

Now caring for three children, it was immediately clear to Lara that Paul had absolutely no impulse control or social skills whatsoever & she likened his behavior to that of a wild animal. While Les was tending to the nursing homes he owned, Lara was left to try to hold down the fort at home as they now had five children after having a daughter & a son together.
Shelly constantly caused chaos & stress in their home, lying & manipulating her parents whenever she could. When she failed to turn in her homework, she lied & said her siblings destroyed it. As time went on, the mental manipulation turned physical & she would put bits of glass in the bottom of her siblings’ shoes so their feet would be sliced as they put them on.
According to author Gregg Olsen, who wrote the 2019 book about this case, If You Tell: A True Story of Murder, Family Secrets, and the Unbreakable Bond of Sisterhood, rather than nurturing her younger brothers, Paul & Chuck, Shelly tormented them.

She was increasingly resentful of her stepmother, doing everything in her power to make Lara’s life more difficult. She blatantly ignored her requests, often picked fights, she was very quick to remind her that she wasn’t her real mother & there wasn’t a day that went by that Shelly didn’t tell her that she hated her. Although Lara was shocked by this behavior, it was her goal to provide Shelly with a stable, loving home in the wake of her tumultuous younger years.
One year after her mother’s death in March 1969, when Shelly was nearly 15-years-old, she didn’t come home from school as expected. When Lara contacted the school, she was told that Shelly had been placed in a juvenile detention center in Vancouver, Washington, but they wouldn’t tell her why.
As she & Les made the drive over, they had no idea what was going on & they could only speculate that maybe she’d stolen something. On their arrival, they were stunned when they were told that Shelly had accused her father of sexually abusing her.
After they got home that night & Lara went through her stepdaughter’s room hoping to find some sort of clue, she found a True Confessions magazine wedged under the mattress. On the cover was the headline, I was raped at 15 by my dad. After a medical exam was complete, it was concluded that Shelly had lied about the sexual abuse.
Family therapy as well as private sessions with Shelly proved to be a waste of time as she maintained that she was innocent of all that she’d been accused of. After she wasn’t allowed back at Battle Ground High School, she was sent to live with Lara’s parents in Hoodsport, Washington.
Her behavior showed no improvement & rather than washing the dishes as she promised, she threw them in the trash. After she volunteered to babysit the neighbor’s children, they came to learn that while they’d been out, she barricaded them in their bedrooms with heavy furniture. As she’d done with her dad, she also falsely accused her grandfather of abuse.
Unsurprisingly, her pattern of manipulation carried on from adolescence to adulthood. In 1973 at 19-years-old, she married her first husband, Randy Rivardo, someone she met two years earlier when she was living with her aunt & uncle in Pennsylvania.
Randy & Shelly had one child together, a daughter named Nikki, who was born in February 1975. Their marriage ended when Randy could no longer handle Shelly’s erratic behavior, escalating abuse & manipulation.

At 24-years-old she married her second husband, Danny Long, in June 1978. Only two months later, their daughter, Samantha “Sami” was born in August 1978. Five years into their marriage, they divorced in 1983, a time when Shelly had another man in waiting.
In April of 1982, Shelly had met David Knotek, a construction worker & Navy veteran, at a bar while he was in town from Raymond, Washington, two hours northwest of Battle Ground.
Their relationship was built on a lie from the start, as Shelly told him that she was dying of cancer, a lie she would maintain for many years. After living together in Raymond for five years, they were married in December 1987. Two years later, their daughter Tori was born in 1989, expanding their family to five.
From an outsider’s perspective, they seemed like a very typical, happy household, but this was far from true. Early on in their marriage, Shelly was both verbally & physically abusive toward Dave, who never stood up to protect himself or their daughters. He dealt with the issues with avoidance, staying away from home for work whenever possible.

After they moved into a house at the end of a long, private drive before Tori was born, the family lived in fear of Shelly. They knew that she used anything she could get her hands on as a weapon against them, beating her two daughters if she felt they’d done something wrong, oftentimes when they were fast asleep upstairs in their bed. The abuse was especially focused on her oldest daughter, Nikki.
Many times, the girls had no idea what had even upset their mom as she cursed & hit them. Nikki was forced to wear ballet tights under her shorts to conceal her injuries when she played volleyball for her elementary school.
Shelly was both exceptionally physically & mentally abusive toward her daughters, getting more creative with the torture as they got older. They weren’t allowed to use the bathroom or shower without her permission.
Despite the horrors within the four walls of their home, Shelly cheerfully decorated their house with a country motif, covering every available wall or surface with a family photo that hid the true pain of what was actually happening.
Looking back, Sami indicated that although she loved her stepdad, because he was a weak man who lacked a backbone, her mom was so easily able to control & manipulate him. She believed that had Dave found the right woman, he could have no doubt been an amazing husband, but instead, he got his life ruined by Shelly just like they all did.
Shelly called her new form of punishment against Nikki wallowing, which was a combination of humiliation & physical abuse that only happened at night. As Nikki slept, her mom would flip her bedroom lights on, order her to strip naked & go downstairs, all the while hurling insults at her.
While she was forced to squat naked in the frigid mud, Dave would spray Nikki with the hose at Shelly’s orders as Nikki sobbed, shivered & begged for them to stop. Meanwhile, Shelly stood nearby, telling her to wallow like a pig so she could be taught a lesson as Sami watched in horror from the window above.
Shelly would lock Nikki in her bedroom, sometimes in her closet, for days & weeks at a time, forcing her to use a bucket as a toilet. She once chased her through the house with a belt before shoving her through a glass kitchen door. As blood oozed from her cuts, Shelly looked her daughter in the eye as she said, look what you made me do.
Nikki was shocked that when things calmed down, her mom actually apologized for her actions. She also took her to get her hair styled & then out for a mother/daughter dinner.
In the middle of 1988, less than a year after Dave & Shelly got married, Shelly invited her 13-year-old nephew, Shane Watson, to move into their home, shortly before the birth of their daughter, Tori. Nikki was 14 at the time, while Sami was 10.
Shane had been living in a highly unstable environment as his father, Shelly’s brother Paul, was a member of a biker gang who was in & out of jail while his mom lacked the ability to care for him due to her substance abuse issues.
Shane was a sweet kid who had a goofy personality, he was quick to tell a joke & was always smiling. As time went on, he acted as more of a brother to Nikki & Sami than a cousin.
After Shelly applied for benefits to take care of her nephew, she bought him new school clothes & set him up in a cozy bedroom in the basement. Very quickly, he started calling Shelly & Dave mom & dad.

Sadly, this didn’t last & rather than being welcomed into a safe, stable environment, Shane quickly became yet another victim of Shelly’s abuse. She left him a never-ending list of chores that left him little downtime, but he did everything he could to keep his aunt happy.
If he didn’t do things to her liking, Shane’s belongings were taken away down to his blanket & then his bed before he was left to sleep on the floor. His every-other-week shower privileges were soon forbidden & he was given only one set of clothes to wear to school, leaving classmates to call him the smelly, greasy boy.
Shane was also subjected to Shelly’s wallowing & since they were so close in age & each suffering the same fate, he & Nikki joined forces & bonded. Sami recalls her mom forcing Shane & Nikki to strip naked & slow dance together in the living room as a way to humiliate them, the pair sobbing the entire time.
In the midst of the horrors of their home lives, Shelly’s moods would suddenly shift as if a light switch had been flipped. According to Nikki, her mother was basically like a ticking time bomb that no one was able to anticipate when or what would cause it to go off.
When her mom was calm & happy, she would shower them all with love & affection, but when her mood was foul, she would turn cold & sadistic without warning. Even forgetting to ask her for permission to use the bathroom in their own home was enough to inspire a fit of rage.
During Christmas of 1988, when Shelly was 34-years-old & pregnant with Tori, she announced that her hair stylist & best friend, 30-year-old Kathy Loreno, would be moving in with them. After losing her job & being turned away by her mother, Shelly told them that Kathy was going to basically act as a midwife, helping with the baby.

Shelly & Dave moved Kathy’s twin bed & dresser into the open area between Sami & Nikki’s bedrooms upstairs, decorating the space to make it feel comfortable.
Kathy’s sister Kelly described her as a people pleaser & a giver. According to Nikki, Kathy worshiped her mom, hanging on to every word she spoke, defending her no matter what.
Dave & Shelly’s daughter, Tori Knotek, was born in the first week of June 1989. Although she was only born one week early, Shelly claimed that Tori’s lungs were undeveloped & that her heart had an issue that needed to be watched. After her birth, she was rushed back to the hospital after Shelly claimed that the baby had stopped breathing, saying it had been her who was there to revive her.
When 14-year-old Nikki came downstairs one day, she found her mom holding a pillow over her baby sister’s face. Too scared to say anything, she could only wonder if her mom was the reason that Tori’s heart monitor was so frequently alarming. From that moment on, both she & Sami kept a close eye on their mom.
Throughout this time, Shelly was still maintaining that she had cancer & needed to go in for treatments, later telling her stepmom, Lara Watson, that it was non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Only days later, she called Lara back to say that the doctors had been wrong as it was actually cancer of her pituitary gland.
As Shelly explained that she might not have much time left, Lara, being in the medical field, was shocked that her doctor’s could have made such a terrible mistake. Lara offered to come up to help with the kids, but Shelly assured her that her friend Kathy was there to help.
Kathy kept in close contact with Lara, updating her on how things were going at home with Shelly as well as with the kids. However, Lara soon began to believe that something was off as during one conversation with Nikki, she could hear screaming in the background. When she asked about it, her granddaughter told her, Mom’s just mad at Kathy again.
As time continued on & Shelly remained vague about her treatments, Lara started to grow suspicious. When she talked to Dave, who took everything his wife said as the truth, he confirmed that he’d never gone into the doctor’s office with her, claiming that his wife was too proud.

Sami & Nikki couldn’t help but notice that slowly, over time, Kathy’s bold personality began to fade. She was without money of her own, away from her family & in a vulnerable position, relying fully on Shelly for support. Soon, she began hitting Kathy with whatever she could grab & although she sometimes threatened to leave, Shelly convinced Kathy that she was the issue.
She mentally manipulated her, convincing Kathy that she was binge eating during the night while she was sleepwalking, saying this was why she wasn’t losing weight. She also tried to convince her that she had sleptwalked naked in Shane’s bedroom, accusing her of wanting him despite the fact that he was only a teenager, making the children to go along with her lies.
Shelly began forcing Kathy to take sedatives before bed & to sleep in the boiler room of the basement. She slowly confiscated all of Kathy’s belongings, including her clothes & forced her to do housework completely naked. She wasn’t able to use the restroom without permission & she was forced to bathe outside with the garden hose.
Both Shelly & Dave both physically & mentally abused her, using makeshift waterboarding equipment, striking her in the head, slapping her & pulling her across the floor by her hair. They duct taped her arms & legs together before pouring bleach or salt on her wounds, they forced her to ingest salt & made her work outside in the cold, wearing little clothing until she became hypothermic.
Looking back, Sami couldn’t understand why Kathy didn’t just leave their house since she was an adult who had her own car, but in the same sense, as sick as they knew it was, they felt relief that their mom’s rage was being targeted elsewhere.
After Shelly would force Shane to inflict abuse on Kathy, she would swoop in to act as her savior.
Throughout the five years that Kathy lived in the Knotek home, she lost one-hundred pounds, her hair was chopped short & began to fall out & her dental work began to fail as Shelly fed her a steady diet of sedatives that she’d gotten from various doctors & pharmacies.
Shane tried to escape the madness, but Shelly always managed to track him down. As punishment, she forced him to take his clothing off, she bound his ankles & wrists with duct tape & placed Icy Hot on his genitals while her daughters watched in horror.

In March 1991, when Kathy’s mom needed a major heart surgery, her family tried to reach her at Shelly’s, but Shelly claimed that she moved away from the area with her boyfriend, Rocky, someone they were vaguely familiar with.
Not long after, Kelly got a blurry photo of her sister standing in front of a semi-truck along with a letter in Kathy’s handwriting that explained she was fine. They were left with no choice but to believe the story.
In the summer of 1992, the Knotek family along with Shane & Kathy, moved into an old 1,600 square foot farmhouse out in the country that needed a lot of work. While Tori slept in her parent’s bedroom, Nikki & Sami each had a tiny bedroom upstairs, Shane slept on a blanket on the floor of Nikki’s closet & Kathy slept on the living room floor.

Kathy’s indoor accommodations didn’t last long before Shelly forced her to sleep in a four-foot-by-four-foot pump house outbuilding on the property that was dark, musty & cold.
By 1994, it was clear to the Knotek children that 36-year-old Kathy was extremely ill. Her body was covered in bruises & wounds, her skin hung from her body due to the excessive weight loss, one side of her face slightly drooped & although she sat with her eyes open, it was clear she was no longer really there.
When Dave came home from working on Whidbey Island in July 1994, Kathy had been moved to their unfinished laundry room. He heard a noise coming from the room unlike any noise he’d ever heard before. Kathy was moaning & gurgling & when he went in to check on her, he could see that she was choking on her own vomit as her eyes rolled into the back of her head.

Although he knew he should have called 911, he also knew that Kathy’s injuries would implicate them. He began to clear her airway & start CPR, but it was sadly too late.
Learning that she had died, the children were hysterical as Shelly brought her daughters to a motel for the night, taking Shane back to the house with her. According to Dave, he, Shane & Shelly carried Kathy’s body out to the backyard firepit where they burned her before transferring her charred remains to buckets that they dumped into the Pacific Ocean.
Shelly threatened the kids that if they ever told anyone about what happened to Kathy, they would all go to jail. She became increasingly paranoid that Shane was going to tell their secret until six months later in February 1995, only weeks before Nikki’s 20th birthday, when Shane was suddenly gone.

Shelly told her daughters that their cousin, who they adored, had traveled north to Alaska to work as a fisherman. She went on to say that before he left, he gave her a wooden birdhouse with a note that expressed his love for her.
Nikki knew this was an absolute lie as her cousin hated her mom & would have never left a note like that behind. However, if anyone asked about him, Shelly would say that she’d only just spoken to him, he was happy & doing well.
After Nikki graduated from high school, she was sent to live with Dave’s sister, Trish, on a reservation in Hope, British Columbia, a decision that became one of the best things to have happened to her. From there, she moved back to Washington, but stayed away from home.
As Sami was preparing to graduate from high school in the spring of 1997, she took her opportunity to run away when her mom & 8-year-old Tori left to go shopping. She went to her grandma Lara’s house in Bellingham, Washington, who by that time, had long been divorced from Les. Shortly thereafter, Nikki joined her sister there after nearly a year of being apart.
When Sami & Nikki were no longer there to face their mom’s abuse, it was 8-year-old Tori who became Shelly’s new victim. When Tori hit puberty, her mom would force her to take her shirt off, telling her that she needed to examine how she was developing. She once convinced her to cut off a lock of her pubic hair for her baby book, telling her that this was completely normal.
When Tori finally took the scissors from her mom & reluctantly handed the hair over, her mom laughed at her in an attempt to humiliate her, telling her she just wanted to see if she could get her to do it. Since Dave was out of town most of the time, Tori was left under her mom’s care.
In 2001, when Tori was 12-years-old, Shelly moved a new person into their home, 55-year-old Ron Woodworth. After his father died in 1996, Ron struggled to hold down a job & his long-term partner had broken up with him, so Shelly set him up in Sami’s old room.

Within a week of living there, Tori could see her mom beginning to mistreat Ron, who was quick to back down from her wrath. The verbal abuse morphed into physical abuse & each night, she began hitting him. He was served only toast & water twice a day as well as a steady diet of sleeping pills. Tori saw how much Ron was changing in the short time he was there. He was forced to go to the bathroom outside & he did chores all day long.
Meanwhile, while Nikki & Lara were spending time together in July 2001, they watched a crime show together on TV. The next morning, Nikki tearfully told her grandmother that her mom & dad had killed Kathy Loreno. Lara contacted the local chief of police in Sandy, Oregon, who contacted the Pacific County sheriff’s deputy, Jim Bergstrom
Jim asked Lara to write everything down & on July 11, 2001, she faxed 3 pages to him, marking the first page as urgent. Nikki described the abuse that Kathy faced while living with them, down to the last day they saw her alive. She wrote that white foam was coming out of her mouth, she wasn’t moving & they were sure she was dead. She wrote about her parents tending to a fire & burning Kathy’s belongings. Nikki ended the letter by discussing how scared she was that her mom would hurt her or blame her dad.
Nikki, who was also convinced that her mom had Shane killed, drove to the sheriff’s department to give her statement to Jim in person. Despite the written & verbal statements, to Nikki’s shock, nothing happened. However, she eventually learned that they wanted to verify her statement with Sami, who was fearful of returning their phone calls.
The abuse against Ron continued; Shelly forced him to drink his own urine. As had been the case with Kathy, he lost an alarming amount of weight, she cut off his beloved ponytail & he lost most of his teeth.
Shelly was also hired to care for an 81-year-old man named James “Mac” McClintock in September 2001. He wrote a will, leaving his estate, his beloved black Labrador, Sissy, as well as $5,000 to help care for Sissy. Upon Sissy’s death, Shelly would be awarded his estate which was valued at $140,000.
Only five months later, in February 2002, Shelly called 911 to report that Mac had fallen from his motorized wheelchair. The death certificate lists his cause of death as acute subdural hematoma as well as blunt impact to the head while his manner of death was ruled undetermined. Six months later, Shelly reported that Sissy had died which meant that Mac’s house was now Shelly’s.

It later came to light that she had lied about Sissy’s death to take early ownership of Mac’s home.
In 2003, while Dave was back in town, Tori saw that Ron, who had been on the roof cleaning shingles, had fallen off & likely broken his leg. Rather than seeking medical attention, Dave & Shelly forced him back onto the roof & made him jump off down to the gravel below. This happened several more times, once when Ron wore nothing but underwear. Tori could see that his feet were bloodied & battered as her mom made him do it over & over.
To tend to his wounds, Shelly boiled water & mixed bleach in, forcing Ron to submerge his feet into the mixture. Tori, who was 14-years-old at this point, recalls the horrific smell of decomposing flesh that remained for about a month until 57-year-old Ron suddenly disappeared.
Shelly claimed he was staying at a friend’s house & she was checking on him daily, but Tori knew this was yet another lie.
Right around this time, in July 2003, Shelly contacted Sami, who was living & working as a teacher in Seattle, to tell her that she was dropping Tori off to stay with her for a few days.
After seven years of Tori not seeing her oldest sister, Sami & Tori met up with Nikki the following day. By this time, Nikki was a 28-year-old married woman.
During this time, Shelly contacted Dave on July 22, 2003 to tell him that he needed to get home right away because something happened to Ron. When he got home, she claimed to have found him dead on the back porch so she dragged his body to a freezer in an outbuilding, wrapped him in sleeping bags & placed him inside until he could come home later that week to help her dispose of his remains.

Since there was an active burn ban in Pacific County, Dave was unable to immediately burn his remains as he had done with Kathy. Instead, he buried him in their yard.
Through it all, Dave remained delusionally loyal to Shelly, claiming she had done nothing to harm Kathy nor Ron, saying she only failed to call authorities after they died.
During their visit, Tori opened up to Sami & told her about the abuse she faced at home since her big sisters had moved out. Sami was devastated, hoping & convincing herself that her sister had been spared. She also asked about Ron, which was when Tori told her sister that she believed he was dead.
They contacted Nikki to fill her in, but because authorities had done nothing after Nikki’s report two years earlier, they hesitated to contact the police.
Unable to risk their sister’s safety, Nikki & Sami drove to Pacific County on August 6, 2003 to report everything. This time, authorities believed them. The following morning, Deputy Jim Bergstrom came knocking on Shelly’s door & Tori was taken from the home by Child Protective Services.
When officers questioned Dave about Kathy & Ron down at the station, he quickly cracked & told them where Kathy’s remains had been scattered after they burned her body in their firepit. He also told them where Ron had been buried. Both he & Shelly were arrested that day on what was ironically Kathy’s birthday. Dave also confessed to what Nikki had always believed, that Shane was also dead.
He claimed that when he found Shane playing with a rifle in one of their outbuildings, something he had forbidden him from doing, Shane refused to hand the gun over. As they began struggling over the weapon, it suddenly fired & killed Shane. Dave went on to say that, as had been the case with Kathy, Shane’s body had been burned & scattered into the ocean.
Nikki felt the weight of the world on her shoulders after she learned the truth about her cousin, believing it was all her fault. The day after Kathy died in the summer of 1994, Shane showed Nikki three Polaroid images of Kathy that Shelly had taken that depicted her naked, covered in bruises & crawling across the floor.
Shane told Nikki that he wanted to take the photos to the police & she agreed. However, the next morning, she told her mom about the photos, something she still struggles to understand why she did to this day.
It wasn’t until February 1995, six months after Kathy died, when Nikki was startled awake by a noise. What she hadn’t known at the time was that Dave had gotten his .22-caliber rifle from his truck before he found Shane in an outbuilding & fired the rifle into the back of his nephew’s head.
He then placed his body in a sleeping bag until the girls were away & he could burn his body. Once the 19-year-old’s body had been reduced to basically ash, he put it into bags & dumped them into the Pacific Ocean at Washaway Beach.
Dave cleaned Shane’s blood with bleach & buried the rifle off of a remote logging road, but then later dug it back up & burned it. He then contacted the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office to report that Shane had run away.
After their arrests, Shelly & Dave were held on multi-million dollar bonds while the Knotek girls avoided the media at all costs. Two weeks later, 25-year-old Sami got guardianship of her little sister, Tori.

Six months later, in February 2004, Dave Knotek pleaded down his first-degree murder charge for Shane Watson’s death to second-degree murder. He also pleaded guilty to unlawful disposal of human remains & rendering criminal assistance. He was sentenced to a little under 15 years in prison.
Since Kathy’s body had not been found & an autopsy on Ron couldn’t prove exactly how he’d been injured or by whom, Pacific County prosecutors didn’t believe that Shelly would be found guilty of first-degree murder charges for their deaths.
Ten months after her arrest, she entered an Alford plea for the second-degree murder of Kathy & the manslaughter charge for Ron’s death, meaning she maintained her innocence while admitting that the state had enough evidence against her for a conviction. Two months later, Shelly was sentenced to 22 years without the opportunity to appeal.
Through it all, she maintained her innocence, claiming to be a friend to Kathy & Ron, accusing Nikki & Shane of being Kathy’s abusers. Eight months later, in April 2005, Shelly tried to withdraw her Alford plea, claiming that she hadn’t understood the consequences, but this motion was denied.
Dave Knotek was released from prison in 2016 after serving 13 of his 15 year sentence, He is 73-years-old & lives in Aberdeen, Washington. He’s kept in touch with Sami as well as his biological daughter, Tori, who have each forgiven him. Nikki, on the other hand, refuses to speak with him because of his role in the abuse she suffered.
After serving only 18 years of her 22 year sentence, Shelly was released from prison at 68-years-old on November 8, 2022.
Nikki is raising her own children in a way that is opposite of how she was raised. She treats them with love & respect & tries to think of her parents as little as possible.
The Knotek sisters see each other several times a year, mostly meeting up at Nikki’s house in Seattle & they text & talk all the time. None of the girls have anything to do with Shelly.
The story of Shelly Knotek is difficult to comprehend, not just because of the cruelty involved, but because of how long the cruelty went on behind the walls of an ordinary looking home.
36-year-old Kathy Loreno, 19-year-old Shane Watson & 57-year-old Ron Woodworth were very different people whose lives became entangled through Shelly. They were people who deserved dignity, care & protection, but all three would sadly die after being pulled into her world.
What makes this case especially disturbing is that the abuse wasn’t always hidden. There were injuries & victims who were deteriorating physically & emotionally. There were children showing up to school unwashed, bruised, wearing the same, soiled clothing day in & day out, children who were forced to witness & endure what no child should ever have to.
This case is a reminder that abuse doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. Sometimes it happens slowly when a person is deprived of basic necessities & care, when they’re isolated, controlled & humiliated until they become convinced that what is happening to them is deserved.
